C'mon, Seriously Dude? UPDATE

Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

Uhhhh... why?

"Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for 'his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.'"

Oh, okay. I guess. Maybe they should rethink their whole evaluation policy a bit. Seems like they're kinda just giving the award out nowadays. And don't get all defensive and bent-out of shape, you hippie pigs. All I'm saying is I'd be more than happy to go to North Korea and throw down on some ping-pong with Kim Jong-il, but you won't see me getting any goddamn medals.

UPDATE: Starting to make more sense now...

Let's see...he's the first president that I can remember that has taked about disarmament for the US (not just the rest of the world), he has closed one of the most egregious prisons in the world, led the US in averting a potential worldwide depression, is putting US support behind peace talks in the Middle East and is trying to end an 8-year occupation in Iraq...and that's just his first 8 months. Huh, it's like their giving the award for efforts toward peace not bullshit bravado....strange

The major problem that I have with him getting the prize is stated above: "...and that's just his first 8 months." He's been in office for an incredibly short amount of time, and while he's made some moves that could be considered beneficial towards the ideal of "peace" he hasn't done nearly enough to warrant the highest international prize one can get for such endeavors. I'd liken it to giving Jaba the Cy Young after pitching for 6 months because he did some good things starting out. I know the Peace Prize committee has given out some bullshit ones before (see 2007's gift to Al Gore), but generally they give it out to people with a lifetime of service and contributions to peace (see Mother Teresa and Desmond Tutu). His resume doesn't support that weight of insight. He hasn't led to US to adverting a worldwide depression; that potential still exists, even if it is much more slim then before, and Obama certainly wasn't the only force behind that. Closing Guantanamo Bay was a good move towards world peace, I can't argue there, but he was merely making up for the fact that we opened it up in the first place; he walked into the situation and did the only thing he could, as keeping it open wouldn't have been politically advantageous to him in the slightest. And talking about disarmament is just that: talking. No action has been taken, and for all we know no action ever will. The peace price shouldn't be given out for what one talks about doing or has plans to do; it should be given for actions taken.

I like Obama, I believe in a good majority of his policies, and I believe his election as the first African American president of the most powerful country in the world is a huge step towards peace and racial equality. But in 8 months he doesn't have the time invested to prove to the international community of his worth in terms of a policy of peace.

Andy wins.

And yet, Obama still has the Noble Peace prize, so I kind of feel like we all win :)

And if you still can't figure out why Obama got it, I think Bono put it best: The Nobel Peace Prize is the rest of the world saying, “Don’t blow it.”

Thank God we have Bono's opinion on the matter. I'm always wondering what he thinks about these issues.

All in all, my post was pretty diplomatic for me, unlike my friend Dave, who makes his opinion quite clear: http://civichostility.wordpress.com/2009/10/09/who-will-win-the-next-nobel-peace-prize/

Regardless of what you think about him winning it, you have to agree he was pretty classy about accepting it and saying he was surprised, that he considers it a "call to action," etc. I (heart) him. Love, Hippie Pig

This hippie pig says it's far more productive forcing him not to blow it than it is bitching about his getting it, since that's what Faux News would want you to do.
